Q2 Humanities Project

We will be working on this project throughout quarter 2. The project will be turned in for a TEST grade on Wednesday, December 9th. Most of the work will be completed in class, but be prepared to complete some of the pamphlet at home.

Assignment: Create an authentic looking pamphlet detailing the journey from the American Revolution to the construction of the Constitution. The pamphlet needs to be easy for the average person to read. It will cover the French and Indian War, Taxation, American Revolution, Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. This pamphlet is to be used as a quick reference, so your work should be easy to read.

Your pamphlet MUST include the following items in the order listed

Page 1 – French and Indian War – Create a map detailing the transfer of power in North America. (see page 96) Explain why the war turned in favor of the British.

Page 2 – Road to Revolution – Create a flowchart of the causes and effects of the British and Colonists actions. (Use pages 102-103 as a guide)

Page 3 – Strengths and Weaknesses – Create a detailed chart to show the strengths and weaknesses of both the British and the American colonists. Be sure to include a section on what occurred in Lexington and Concord. *You will also need to include a map of the Battle of Boston on this page. (Use page 115)

Page 4 – Declaration of Independence – Breakdown the Declaration into its three parts and clearly explain each one. Write a description of the challenges faced by the continental congress. (See pages 122-125)

Pages 5-6 – Map of the Revolution – Create a map to show important battles from the Revolutionary War. Then describe the battles and how they impacted the final results of the war (i.e. Bunker Hill, Saratoga, Yorktown). Include the Treaty of Paris.

Page 7 – Influences on American Government – Create a list and provide descriptions of influences on American Government. Write a critique on why the Articles of Confederation did not work. be sure to explain how the founding fathers determined that it would not work

Page 8 – Constitutional Notes – Instructions for this activity will be given on the in-class work day.

Page 9 – Federalists vs Anti Federalists – Create a visual to display the differences between the federalists and anti federalists

Page 10 – Federalism Chart – Instructions for this activity will be given on the in-class work day.

Page 11 – Separation of Powers – Create a diagram to show the separation of powers in the government. Be sure to show how they check and balance each other

Page 12 – Checks and Balances – use the diagram in the book as your guide.

Page 13 – Article 1 – Detail the important aspects of Article 1. Be sure to include the ÒTerms ChartÓ found on page 190

11-16-09 Reviewed Article I quiz and corrected wrong answers. Article II notes and students were told we have a quiz tomorrow over Article II. Progress reports for the nine week project need to be returned by Tuesday.

11-13-09 Preamble quiz. Students must recite the Preamble from memory. Work on Pamphlet page 5-7. I sent home a progress report home with all students in class today on their pamphlet project. Please sign this form and return to school. We should be working on page 7 at this time. if they haven’t started on page 7 they are behind. This project is due December 9th. I have been giving them a chance to work on this project in class but some students have fallen behind.

11-09-09 My Brother Sam is Dead Vocabulary Test. Students have been provided the vocabulary sheets as we have read the story. Make sure they study the bold words and definitions. My Brother Sam is dead folders. Complete Article I worksheet.

11-06-09 I will give students this class time to work on their My Brother Sam is Dead folders. They are due on Monday for a test grade.

11-05-09 Introduction to the Constitution. Article I notes. We will recite the preamble from memory for a test grade on November 13,2009.

11-4-09 We finished our novel today in class. Students were given time to work on their folders and time lines. Folders will be due on Monday

Study Island pretest was due last Friday. If you did not complete your assignment, you have until this Friday to complete it for 10 points off.

11-03-09 Chapters 10-12 My Brother Sam is Dead. Last vocabulary sheet handed out today in class. Work on folders.

11-02-09 Work on My Brother Sam is Dead folder. Students will design a movie poster for the Movie My Brother Sam is Dead. They will illustrate a favorite scene and also create a flag on their folders. Students were also given a time line of historical events that parallel our story.

10-21-09 Due to the ACT Explorer Test we will watch a video in class about the forming of our new nation. If you are absent today or tomorrow you will do not have any make up work.

I have assigned a pretest on study island to be completed by OCT 31. Students may use the computers in classroom or at home to complete this assignment. This will be a HW grade and only graded for completion. I have their passwords and user names if they have forgotten them.

10-16-09 Chapter 3-4. I am playing an audio tape in class and stopping it after each chapter so we can answer and discuss the reading check questions. Students were given time to work on page 2 of their pamphlet. They were also given access to study island.

10-15-09 Chapter 1-2 in class. Students were given 2 worksheets in class. One is a vocabulary worksheet and the other is a worksheet with questions about the chapters. We will answer these as we read. The vocabulary worksheet has words already defined on the sheet. These words will appear on a vocabulary test. I will give a full weeks notice before we take the vocabulary test.

10-07-09 Chapter 4 section 3 time line and map activity. If the weather is nice we will go outside and recreate the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Battle of Saratoga. If we have weather issues, I will try and reserve the auditorium.

10-05-09 We will begin reading ” My Brother Sam is Dead” after Fall Break. Chapter 4 section 2 notes. HW read p. 118-121. p. 121 # 1-5. Students will be given time in class to work on their pamphlet project.

09-29-09 Introduction to Chapter 4. Students will create a pamphlet over the course of the new nine weeks. We will create a cover pattered after Thomas Paines “Common Sense”. Each week we will add a new page to our pamphlet. This weeks page we will make a map of North America before and after the French and Indian War. This will be a test grade. We also worked on a mercantilism worksheet in class which was due at the end of the period.

We will begin reading a novel in Humanities next week. I only have enough copies for a classroom set. If you want a book of your own you can buy one. The title of the book is “MY Brother Sam is Dead”.

09-25-09 The chapter 3 test will be rescheduled for Monday. Complete p. 105-106, The Road to Revolution Foldable.

09-24-09 Chapter 3 section 5 notes. Road to Revolution.

09-23-09 Students will have time to complete their hyperbole poem. Students will also be given time to work on their foldable assignment. Students will also complete p. 105-106 # 1-21 due on friday.

09-22-09 We finished the Chapter 3 section 4 notes and then we took notes over the French and Indian War. We discussed the impact of the war and why we don’t speak French in class. I introduced a foldable project we will work on in class. The information on the foldable is on the white board behind my desk. This will be due later in the week. Students will use their knowledge of propaganda to help complete this assignment. They will also be creating a political cartoon using Benjamin Franklin’s “Join or Die” political cartoon.

09-21-09 We took notes over six types of propaganda and discussed them in class. Chapter 3 Section 4 notes. A copy of the notes can be found in class.

09-11-09 Class discussion on 9-11-01. Finish notes on chapter 3 section 1. Study guide handed out. Students will need to complete in class p. 73 Geography skills, p.74 primary source practice, p. 76 analysis skills, and p. 77 # 1-4. They also were given a 13 Colony map which will will complete during the upcoming week and turn in by next Thursday. The directions for the map are on the back.

09-09-09 Cool date . Computer lab to finish our brochures. Students who finish early will be given a chance to make a podcast about their colony.

09-08-09 We are working in the computer lab to make a Colony Brochure. The students need to be completed with the project by the end of class tomorrow. We only have the lab for two days. If the student misses class and does not have enough time to finish then I will assign them a 5 paragraph essay on their colony. They have been assigned a colony and given a project sheet.

We did not watch the presidents speech today because we were at lunch.

09-03-09 Class discussion on the Protestant Reformation, Spanish Armada, Early European Colonies, The search for a Northwest Passage. Chapter 2 section 5 notes over the beginning to slavery in North America.

09-02-09 Students worked in small groups to answer questions about section four. We will hold a class discussion about the questions.

09-01-09 Present Mission to Mars. Section 3 quiz. Chapter 2 Section 4 notes. We will discuss the role of European exploration on North America.

08-24-09 Renaissance presentation. Introduction to Chapter 2. Mission to Mars . Students will plan a mission to Mars. They are responsible to make a list of supplies to help in their journey.

08-21-09 Chapter 1 open book test. Renaissance presentation. Students will pick one thing or person from the Renaissance and present it to class on Monday. They need to have a visual aid for their presentation. They will need to speak for 15-30 seconds. They can email me a picture or bring in a picture on a USB drive or create one of their own. I also handed out a TN People worksheet that they can work on and we will review it on 08-27-09.

    Hey Clintonious!
    Do you remember that word thing you showed Keegan, Amelia and I when we visited last year? You took words from the textbook and inserted them to a website and the website made a chart-like thing of the words–the more time the word was used, the bigger it appeared.. Do you have any clue what I’m talking about?
    If so I would LOVE to have the website address!

    If you don’t remember, that’s okay. I kinda confused myself in my rambling. :P
